We all understand how important exercise is for the body, mind, and spirit. What many do not realize is that if you are chronically ill, injured, sleep-deprived, on a caloric restrictive diet, it’s possible for you to be overtraining at a much lower level of physical activity. The consequences can have a profound impact on your overall health and wellbeing.
From the competitive runner, cyclist, exercise enthusiast that does CrossFit, weight training, high-intensity interval training, or the weekend warrior participating in a Tough Mudder all are at potential risk for overtraining.
It doesn’t take much to be on a downward spiral. It is estimated that 61% of all serious runners go through a period of overtraining in their career.
Increase Performance
Keep your body optimized to perform at peak levels for longer periods of time without becoming fatigued.
Decrease Recovery Time
Stimulate proper healing quicker so your body rejuvenates and is ready to go sooner than ever.
Avoid Injuries
Stay healthy and avoid common injuries that hold back performance and keep you from competing at a high level.
The key to recovery is to reduce or stop anything more than moderate physical activity for some time. How long depends on symptoms severity and how long you’ve been overtraining. Focus on gentle activities for recovery such as walking in nature, yoga, or massage. Address any underlying stress-induced HPA-Axis dysregulation, inflammation, gut dysbiosis, nutrient depletion, hormone imbalances, and oxidative stress. Get plenty of sleep and nap during the day. Ensure you do not restrict calories or diet once overtrained. Your body needs an adequate supply of macronutrients especially protein and micronutrients.
What is Overtraining Syndrome / Burnout?
Overtraining syndrome occurs when an athlete doesn’t adequately recover after repetitive intense training, and can include fatigue, declining performance and potential injury. It’s admirable to train hard to succeed in your chosen sport. Logging many miles, spending hours at the gym and working hard day after day can certainly help you achieve your athletic goals. But too much training without sufficient recovery can hinder your progress — and even lead to a decline in your performance.
There are two classifications for too much exercise: overreaching and overtraining.
Overreaching is muscle soreness above and beyond what you typically experience that occurs when you don’t sufficiently recover between workouts. Overreaching usually happens after several consecutive days of hard training and results in feeling run down. Luckily, the effects of overreaching can be easily reversed with rest.
Overtraining occurs when an athlete ignores the signs of overreaching and continues to train. Many athletes believe that weakness or poor performance signals the need for even harder training, so they continue to push themselves. This only breaks down the body further.
Symptoms and warning signs of overtraining
It may be hard to know when you’re overtraining. “It’s natural and expected to feel fatigued after challenging training sessions,” Dr. Goolsby says. “But feeling like you aren’t recovering between sessions or experiencing overall fatigue and difficulty pushing yourself during workouts can be indicators of overtraining.”
Training-related signs of overtraining
Unusual muscle soreness after a workout, which persists with continued training
Inability to train or compete at a previously manageable level
“Heavy” leg muscles, even at lower exercise intensities
Delays in recovery from training
Performance plateaus or declines
Thoughts of skipping or cutting short training sessions
Lifestyle-related signs of overtraining
Prolonged general fatigue
Increase in tension, depression, anger or confusion
Inability to relax
Poor-quality sleep
Lack of energy, decreased motivation, moodiness
Not feeling joy from things that were once enjoyable

I've gotten adjustments from Dr. Ryan; he's really good. Massages from Kyle; he's very knowledgeable and professional, and made the appointments very comfortable. Red light therapy from Caroline; she’s very welcoming and wonderful.

I go to Dr. Caleb the most. I was having a tough time sleeping, so I went to the Eagan location on a Wednesday morning just to get an adjustment; I usually go to the Lakeville office. I got so much instant relief that I was able to take a nap on my lunch break.

I highly recommend this team; they're all amazing and really friendly, and they keep the facilities tidy and clean.
I’ve had a great experience working with Danielle at the Alpha Spine Eagan location. She’s incredibly knowledgeable, attentive, and takes the time to really listen to what’s going on before jumping into treatment. She genuinely cares about her patients’ well-being and it shows in the quality of care she provides. I highly recommend Danielle to anyone looking for a chiropractor who is both skilled and compassionate.
Due to a broken neck in 1999 I've required treatments ever since. Worthington Wellness kept me mobile and Alpha Spine continues to keep me pain free and away from surgery. I've been to MANY chiropractors and they are not all the same. Alpha coordinates treatment between your doctor, their chiropractors, massage therapist and accupuncturist. You can't do that on your own. Professional, caring, friendly staff makes it feel like home. A+++
I greatly appreciate Dr. Danielle's expertise and care. I've been going to her for a while now, and when she joined Alpha Spine the care became even better.
I’ve had both massage and chiropractic services here, and every experience has been top tier. The team is professional, knowledgeable, and truly cares about their clients. I always leave feeling better than when I arrived - highly recommend!
Dr Danielle has transformed our entire family’s health for years! She has helped us through chronic ailments, and sports injuries, always supporting us with kind and masterful care. I highly recommend you add her chiropractic care to your routine.
My experience at Alpha Spine Health & Injury Center has been great! As a long time patient, l can say that the whole team is welcoming, and Dr. Danielle listens and personalizes her care to ensure that your chiropractic needs are met.
Best chiro experience I have had. They treat you like an actual person and not just a number. Danielle is absolutely fantastic. She has been so incredibly helpful in relieving pain in my neck and hips, and especially during my pregnancy. Not to mention how incredibly kind she is. Highly recommend!
Karlily gave an amazing massage! You can tell she puts a lot of care and attention into her technique and reading what your body needs. She always made sure I was comfortable and the space felt so relaxing!
Truly one of the best massage experiences I’ve ever had! Karlily did a phenomenal job kneading out the kinks in my neck and lower back. She moved at my pace and comfort level and was happy to share the knowledge of her craft when I would ask questions. She took time to make sure I was comfortable throughout the entire appointment. I can’t wait to go back!
The chiropractor really knows his stuff and I highly recommend. I had a terrible back injury I came in with. He adjusted me and gave me ways to strengthen, stretch, and treat my back at home for quicker recovery. $180 evaluation and 1st adjustment, $60 every visit after.
Always patient centered, individualizing my needs according to what my body needs and I really appreciate the overall wellness approach and offers acupuncture which is a great addition for myself.
Dr. Heather, Dr. Danielle, and Sarah are wonderful. My family and I have been going here since my son was little (he just graduated high school). Would highly recommend them all!
Dr. Heather, Dr. Danielle, and Sarah have been helping me manage chronic conditions from back pain, carpal tunnel, anxiety, and more for over 5 years. They are part of my core wellness program and I cannot recommend them enough! Their office is calm, and low stress to promote a healthy mindset.
I have seen Sarah twice and each time I felt a noticeable difference! She is very knowledgeable and takes a great deal of time explaining what she is doing and why. I've learned a lot and feel like having a better understanding has really impacted my healing. I would recommend Sarah to anyone in need of someone with vast knowledge and a huge heart! I am so grateful to be working with her! .
My visit to Worthington Wellness was, as it has been each time, professional, pleasant and quite thoughtful regarding my comfort. I always leave the office feeling a lot better than when Iarrived.
Dr Danielle is wonderful! Always able to get me moving again and provide things I can do at home as well. Everyone at Worthington wellness is so friendly and genuinely cares about the patients.
I have been enjoying services at Worthington Wellness Center for the past couple of years and consider it to be an essential piece of my wellness routine. In the absence of these services on Military deployments, I could tell the toll it took on my body. All staff at this center are amazing, knowledgeable, and wonderful humans all around. Highly recommend!
I love how the chiropractors Dr. Heather and Dr. Danielle are gentle when adjusting and they are interested in what’s going on in your life. They are flexible with scheduling appointments.
I came from a chiropractor that adjusted every patient the same everytime. Then I found this group and have been extremely pleased. The appointments are long enough to target specific areas even if those areas change over time. I leave feeling knowledgeable to what is causing an issue and have direct feedback to what I can do different at home to help the adjustments last longer. Highly recommend!
Worthington Wellness is top notch. They are detail oriented, thorough, friendly, and always on time. I would be happy to recommend a friend to this clinic.
Been a 12+ year client. Broke my neck in 2000 and injured lower back in 2008. They have kept me virtually pain free and fully active. My angels. No in and out in 5 minutes. They take their time to give you what you need. I have been to several others in my lifetime but no one comes close to Worthington Wellness.
My first time trying acupuncture. Michelle was very informative and helpful with explaining the process and side effects if any. My next appointment was scheduled for the following week. I felt a big difference after my first appointment of just 30 minutes. My next appointment will be an hour. I'm very excited as acupuncture is beneficial imagine ongoing treatment. I'll be back to my old self in no time.
I love all the ladies at Worthington Wellness! I have suffered from low back pain for so many years. The pain in my legs and loss of feeling drove me to back surgery. I was ok for several years but was then in a car accident which brought me to Dr Heather. I have been under her care for 6 years. She got me straightened around, literally. Medical Drs talk about fusing my back but with regular monthly appointments I am able to avoid that. Now I get adjusted once a month, have cupping done, and a monthly therapeutic massage. If I have to miss an appointment due to work I can feel it! I now live over an hour away..... But these ladies are worth the drive. Thank you for keeping me moving!!
After years of being very active, I suddenly developed neck and lower back pain that forced me to give up all of my activities. I saw medical doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists and acupuncturists. One medical doctor was able to give me some relief with medication, but not enough to allow me to resume any activity. I saw Dr .Danielle at Worthington Wellness Center. She evaluated my neck and lower back, and developed a corrective care plan, consisting of spinal adjustments, stretches and exercises. After five treatments with Dr. Danielle, I have found relief to the point that I have been able to resume some of my activities. I am confident, that with Dr. Danielle's continued care, I will continue to see improvement. Thank you, Dr. Danielle!
After trying to treat my chronic migraines with doctors, pain specialists, neurologists, massage, twelve different medications, and an array of other treatments I have found Dr. Heather and her techniques to be the most effective course. I've struggled with daily migraines and headaches for just over a year, and Dr. Heather has made it so I can attend school again, work through a full day without having to lay down, and regain the energy I had before I was diagnosed with chronic migraines. Dr. Heather's chiropractic work and push for living a healthy lifestyle has done more for me than two rounds of botox injections into my head, trigger point injections, and countless medications. I would refer anyone to Dr. Heather wholeheartedly.
